History of Castlevania
The original Castlevania game for the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in 1986 in Japan, 1987 in North America, and 1988 in Europe. It was an immediate smash hit and led to multiple sequels across multiple consoles. In the original Castlevania game, Simon must defeat the evil lord Dracula. First, he must trek through 6 levels of increasing difficulty while making wise use of secondary weapons such as holy water, the watch, and the frustratingly bad dagger. Future renditions of Dracula would feature other members of Simon's family and some games, such as Castlevania 3, would even allow you to choose different characters and thus different paths in the game.

Fond Memories of Castlevania
As a huge Castlevania fan, the original NES version has a special place in my heart. I can still recall being 7 years old and trying to beat this game with my friends. We would spend all afternoon just trying to get out of level 2 but when you're 7, even reaching the Medusa is hard enough let alone beating her! I remember the part of level 2 that gave us the most trouble was when the flying medusa heads come at you while you're trying to jump first left to right across some pits and then again as you come back from right to left across those very same pits. Man, we must have wasted years of our lives on that part! (Okay slight exaggeration). And don't even get me started on those spiked crushers that kill you instantly. The reward for finally getting to Medusa and killing her was to get to level 3 where those little hunchback guys would just eat us alive and jump all over our heads while we cursed at the TV and the Nintendo and prayed our mothers didn't hear all of the colorful language we were using! Ah, good times.
